Looking Inward: Autumn Interior Inspiration 2026

Autumn is here.

My inspiration for this season may change slightly year to year, but it is always grounded in the same principles: a longing for warmth and comfort, a reflection of nature’s changes, and the beginning of slowing down and looking inward.

Let’s dive into what is calling to me this fall season, and how you can incorporate fall into your interiors without relying solely on pumpkins.

A touch of art deco

With opulence being more prevalent in these last few months of the year because of the holidays, I am drawn to the sophistication of Art Deco. Adding in cooler metals, tassels, fringe, and the classic repeating shapes from art deco is a great way to bring in sophistication into your home. Also, if you have a more modern home and aren’t sure what type of vintage pieces can work with your home, I would explore art deco.

Layering wood

Don’t be afraid to embrace your wood finishes. Autumn is all about the warm colours, and layering your wood finishes and furnishings is the best way to create a warm and comforting environment.

Biophilic sculptural metal

I’ve been seeing a lot more organic sculptural pieces in interiors lately, whether that’s in a light fixture, furniture, an exterior gate, or a stairway railing as seen above. I think it is a beautiful juxtaposition of the cold harshness of metal paired with the soft organic curves of flowers and vines. This is a unique way to add a natural element to your home.

Curation of a collection

Showing off your unique collections in your home is what makes a house a home. The pieces that show who you are as a person are what creates an inviting space, which is what we’re all longing for in our homes during these cooler months.

Embracing imperfection

Your home gets used and loved, and it is going to show. Don’t let the fear of stains or scratches keep you from enjoying your home. A home you’re going to want to retreat to will have natural materials, imperfections, and well-loved furniture, and that’s what makes it cozy. Perfection will always look cold, like a furniture show room or a commercial space.

Unexpected animal print

Do you know the unexpected red theory? Lately I’ve felt that animal print can have it’s own version. Sometimes you need to add a touch of spice to a room to keep it from looking stale (like red in the unexpected red theory), and I’ve found that animal print can also achieve this. I’ve never been the biggest fan of animal print, but it does have a unique quality that other patterns can’t achieve. Not only does it add a natural element, but it creates playfulness and variety.

Books, books, and more books

With the season of Fall comes the season of back to school. People are staying inside more, diving into their interests, and reflecting on their year. What better way to inspire that creativity than to create a comforting atmosphere surrounded by books?

Dark iron and oxidized metals

At this point in time, it seems like almost all metal finishes are popular right now. Although I’m not a fan of all of them (bright gold, brushed nickel, and I’m starting to steer away from matte black), the ones that are calling to me are the ones that are unlacquered or have a lived in finish. Dark iron has a beautiful quality and depth to it, which complements the moodier atmosphere of autumn.

Prioritizing handcrafted

Handcrafted furniture, custom painted murals, DIY curtains — this pull to hand made items has been the biggest inspiration. Handcrafted items are all about slowing down, being intentional, and being present, which is the focus for this Autumn season.

Deep chartreuse

Almost an olive green, but a bit more yellow and saturated. This colour has been catching my eye, and I love that is not your typical fall colour (like burgundy, camel, rust), but it still has the warmth as expected with this season.

Getting creative

Lastly I leave you with this: get creative. Think outside the box. Try something new. And if it doesn’t work out, try something else. At least you experimented and got creative. Let’s continue to be playful and flex our creativity this Autumn, and enjoy this ever-changing season.

warmly,

Madison
